Effective transitions rely on schools, educators and families working together to make sure the child’s story is passed along and their needs are met across settings. Gone are the days of asking children to be ‘school-ready’. We are working towards schools that are ready to support children through strong communities for learning.
Collaborative professional relationships between early childhood services, such as early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings and schools, is one of the most important ingredients for effective transitions that ensure children’s ongoing learning and wellbeing. Effective transitions ensure children experience continuity between settings, including continuity of pedagogical approach and the impact of coordination and relationship building between early education providers, schools and families.
In 2025, the ACT has negotiated with the Commonwealth to invest Preschool Reform Agreement (PRA) funding allocated to the ECEC sector into quality improvement strategies. A portion of this funding will be used to provide one-off payments to ACT ECEC services to support engagement with the ACT-wide approach to effective transitions.
More information on the ACT-wide approach to effective transitions, and the ACT Continuity and Transitioning Framework, can be found on the ACT Government’s website.
